Helium-filled floating wind turbine, renewable energy with style
There's no doubting that the cause of renewable energy is a noble one. But, ethics aside, it also gives birth to the occasional technical marvel. Altaeros Energies, a company from Massachusetts (with MIT and Harvard blood in its veins) has created one such curiosity. The prototype is a wind-turbine that doesn't just languish on a hill-top, cutting a line in the horizon. No, this one has a helium-filled outer-section which allows it to deploy itself to 1,000 feet, where it can benefit from stronger, more consistent winds and gives nearly twice the power yields of its land bound brethren. That's all very nice, but we just thought it looked dang cool in action.

West African grouping calls summit on Mali, Guinea-Bissau
Tensions eased in post-coup Mali on Friday after the release of 22 political prisoners and as the regional grouping ECOWAS announced a summit on the crisis next week.
Leaders of the Economic Community of West African States will meet in Abidjan on Thursday when they will also address the crisis in Guinea-Bissau, whose government was also overthrown in a military coup, the Ivorian presidency of the bloc said Friday.
In Mali, interim prime minister Cheick Modibo Diarra set about forming his interim government after soldiers agreed to cede power to civilians in the Saharan nation.
And in comments on state television he said that while he was ready for talks with the armed groups who have seized control of the country's north, he would not let them hold the country to ransom.
"Yes, we will negotiate because we hate war. We will negotiate because we are not afraid to negotiate," he said.
But not with "a knife to the throat, accepting a fait accompli."
Ousted president Amadou Toumani Toure, who formally resigned after being overthrown by the military on March 22, left the country to seek refuge in Senegal.
It was not immediately known whether Toure, 63, would stay in Senegal indefinitely.
A military source in Bamako had earlier said on condition of anonymity that Toure had departed "with the agreement of Captain Amadou Haya Sanogo," the coup leader, after soldiers posted at the airport earlier refused to let him leave.
The military source said troops had tried to oppose the former president's departure by firing in the air, sparking mass panic.
Toure's departure from Mali and the release of his allies who were rounded up by the junta helped ease tensions in Bamako where some feared that soldiers were loath to give up power as arrests continued despite the commitment to a return to civilian rule.
The wave of detentions took place shortly after Diarra, a former NASA astrophysicist and current head of Microsoft Africa, was appointed. He is expected to announce the makeup of his transition government in the coming days.
Television footage had showed assault rifles and ammunition clips as Colonel Diamou Keita, the head of the gendarmerie, said they had arrested 11 civilians and 11 soldiers.
Also Friday, former colonial power France called on the military to "respect freedoms, especially that of the press, by withdrawing from the radio-television office."
French foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero hailed the release of political prisoners as "good news," adding: "This type of arbitrary arrest, which maintains a climate of pressure, should not be repeated."
Gendarmerie chief Keita said late Thursday that those released could still be recalled by the authorities for questioning. He did not elaborate.
Renegade soldiers said they acted against the government's inability to stop a Tuareg rebellion in the north. Since then however, the Tuaregs and Al Qaeda-affiliated Islamists have conquered the entire northern part of the country.
Amid a barrage of international condemnation, the junta handed power back to civilian authority but the coup leaders have continued to flex their muscles.
ECOWAS has also condemned last week's coup in Guinea-Bissau and the junta's subsequent decision to appoint a failed presidential hopeful to lead a two-year transition to democracy.
Malian deputies appealed Thursday to the armed movements controlling the north of the country to lay down their arms and withdraw immediately from all the occupied zones.
An African rights body warned Thursday that if Mali did not receive assistance to win back its north from Islamists and other rebels, it could become the "Afghanistan of Africa."

Rihanna Unveils 'Where Have You Been' Video Set Photo
Singer posts picture on Facebook with message to fans: 'The countdown to 'Where Have You Been' is on.'

The pieces of Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" music video puzzle are coming together, one photo at a time.
In a new black-and-white pic posted Monday on her Facebook page, the singer kneels in a landscape of tree branches and cascading flowers. Next to her is a white fur throw. She's wearing a mesh bikini top and a metallic skirt tied around her waist. The look is accessorized with her hair down and lots of big bangles.
In March, Rihanna was snapped on the set of the video. In a candid picture posted online, the singer is looking down, her hair is done up in a messy way and she's sporting no top, but is wearing lots of clunky bracelets. About the video, she teased, "Video shoot goin MAJAH!"
Weeks later, she dropped the single art for the song. In it, Rihanna covers most of her face with a leopard-print scarf. All fans see of her is her eye, all dolled up with heavy, smoky eye makeup.
"Where Have You Been" will be the third video released from Talk That Talk, following the footsteps of the quirky "You Da One" clip and the cinematic "We Found Love." This is also her second single produced and written by Calvin Harris, who also worked with her on "WFL." The song's production also gets an assist from Dr. Luke and Ester Dean, among others.
While she has yet to announce a release date for the video, she did offer a bit of insight into when it might drop, writing on Facebook, "The countdown to 'Where Have You Been' is on."

Moms are building mini-empires online | The Hand
I recently sat in awe in a room full of women ? most of them moms ? who are powerful influencers reaching giant audiences. They are doing that through a variety of social media platforms and creating small media empires ? from their homes./pp Through Internet postings, vocal opinions and business acumen, these tech-savvy women have amassed millions of online followers and captured the attention of the big brands. They are doing it on their own schedules ? in between scout meetings and soccer games ? and redefining what it means to be working moms./pp ?These moms have actually made it acceptable to run businesses out of the home,? said Maria Bailey, CEO of BSM Media and founder of the SheStreams conference I attended in Fort Lauderdale, Fla./pp As I listened to the women talk about their successes, I realized an evolution has occurred. A decade ago, the first phase of mom businesses began rolling out. Moms were starting Internet sites and blogs to stay connected to civilization as they dealt with diapers, temper tantrums, potty training and teething./pp ?The assumption was they were running little businesses from their bedrooms,? Bailey says. But these pioneers found an audience among other mothers, a powerful demographic coveted by big consumer companies. Now these moms are running half-million dollar businesses out of their home and that?s acceptable, even professional, Bailey says./pp Today?s home-based business owners are podcasting, vlogging, marketing through Facebook, holding Twitter parties, pinning on Pinterest, creating YouTube channels, publishing newsletters and reaching across the digital sphere. They have used social media and their relationship-building skills to catapult their careers to the next level. Brands like Disney, Hewlett Packard and Ford have taken notice./pp ?These moms are cyber celebrities selling their identities and endorsements,? says Bailey, who personally connects with more than 8 million parents a month through her podcasts, radio show and websites. ?They give advertisers the ability to reach moms through multiple channels.?/pp Take Abbie Schiller, CEO and founder of The Mother Company, for example. Four years ago, she left her high-paying job in media relations at ABC News in Los Angeles to start her online parenting company. She actually funded the company with a mission ? ?helping parents raise good people? ? by reaching out to 22 parents who she convinced to make an investment. Today, The Mother Company (www.themotherco.com) operates a parenting website and sells a line of children?s products that includes books, shows (on DVD and download), dolls and apps. It reaches hundreds of thousands of mothers a month and has products in Whole Foods./pp ?Our investors saw the opportunity in creating media opportunities for parents and children. That?s not something a corporation can do well. It?s something a mom can do well,? Schiller says. ?Now we have companies clamoring to see how they can be involved in what we?re doing.? In only two years, The Mother Company has attracted Fortune 500 sponsors and advertisers including The Gap and Johnson Johnson. Schiller plans to expand further by offering an interactive digital platform for children./pp As social media explodes, these early adopters with legions of fans see the wave as an opportunity to not just hop on and ride, but to lead./pp When Teana McDonald of Margate, Fla., became a mom, she began making adorable hair accessories for her young daughter. Soon after, she decided to start My Little Diva Accessories from her home, and later expanding into showrooms. To attract more customers, she created a Facebook page and became active on Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest. Within a few months, she had engaged thousands of other mothers online, and her audience still continues to grow. She?s about to launch an online TV show, 3 Loud Women, too./pp ?People buy from people they like, moms especially,? McDonald says. However, she says building an online brand has become competitive as more mothers have discovered the opportunities. ?They?re realizing it?s a big bubble that?s not going to burst.?/pp Recently, McDonald began talking about her online success with other women business owners and that led to her new business, Get It Done Divas, as a social media marketing specialist. Her most common advice: ?You have to figure out what platforms are good for your business.?/pp Cristy Clavijo-Kish says the same phenomenon is sweeping through the Hispanic community of online moms. Not only does Clavijo-Kish run her own bilingual blog and resource site for multicultural parents of tweens, called Los Tweens, she also co-founded Latina Mom Bloggers. Latina Mom Bloggers is the go-to place for Hispanic online moms to learn new ways to leverage social media presence and partner with top brands for social media campaigns, product reviews, ambassador programs and advertising. Even more, Clavijo-Kish sits on the management team of Hispanicize.com, which offers services to social media marketers and bloggers./pp ?Latina moms are learning, from mainstream moms,? Clavijo-Kish says. They are choosing niches for which they have a passion, using conferences for learning opportunities and figuring out how to find sponsorships and advertisers. ?They are starting to make money.?/pp Linda Carmona-Sanchez says she finally realized what these savvy online moms have figured out ? anyone who wants the business of young parents must embrace the web. Last week, Carmona-Sanchez attended a Google sponsored workshop in Miami to create a website for her alliance of child-care providers (childcareflorida.org). She plans to take what she learned at the workshop and help day care operators build their websites. ?The belief has been the best advertising is word of mouth,? Carmona-Sanchez said. ?Not anymore. Parents will talk to each other, but they are more tech savvy and will also look you up online.?/pp As moms begin to see financial payoffs for online efforts, they?re starting to understand the tradeoffs. While they have flexibility and time with their kids, most say they work late into the night and through weekends. Bailey says 80 percent of mom moguls work online regularly from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. The sacrifice, typically, is time to sleep and time spent with their spouse./pp ?Having ongoing, good content takes work,? says Clavijo-Kish. ?Sometimes though, I just have to learn to walk away.?/pp ABOUT THE WRITER/pp Cindy Krischer Goodman is CEO of BalanceGal LLC, a provider of news and advice on how to balance work and life. She can be reached at balancegal@gmail.com. Read her columns and blog at http://worklifebalancingact.com/.

Businesses with little initial investment, paid surveys online ? Ways ...
Who else wants to be aware of the modern ways to make money online?
If you turn off the traditional ways of making money we simply run out making futile efforts to make money. There are simple ways so frightened by their effectiveness and raise the amounts that often. For example there is a big incentive for YouTube to upload videos of families their babies, cats, etc.. Advertising wants to be present in traffic that achieve significant gains distributed and Youtube.
Business with little initial investment, paid surveys online. ? Internet and change the way of making money, and if you are not watching these real opportunities simply not possible to love your quality of life. Imagine how much money could be earning just to complete some questionnaires and comment cards every day? There are many online jobs that seem a little prank that demand.
Polls paid is a business with little initial investment is giving more satisfaction.
One of the difficulties in starting a business online are technical problems to be solved, but a business opinar?as with the following features:
If you need a website
????If you do not have to sell anything
????If you do not need to report to any boss
????If you do not have to meet work schedule
????No fixed fees to complete
Only work as long as you want when you want and from anywhere.
Thousands of people around the world are taking this opportunity to set up their business with little initial investment and make lots of money every month from home. All you need is a computer, internet connection and want to learn something new.
Exit to seek opportunities has a positive and a negative side you should know, as a way of being aware of what truly is doing for hunting opportunities.
No one has found a real opportunity beyond their potential, but you are looking outside, what it means is that you may be encouraging distraction from what really can do.
????The positive thing to look for opportunities outside is to have opportunities to make connections, so focus on this positive and cultivate the best relations.
How much I can earn?
Do not expect to get rich doing business with little initial investment and may be coincidence, but it is something we should take, but we can be very realistic and maximize our efforts to achieve income as:
Up to $ 75 for each survey completed. Has to be there to see this possibility.
????Up to $ 150 dollars for participating in meetings to evaluate new products.
????And more, you have to see for myself for an incredibly low price.
I think it sounds too good to be true? Do not blame you at all, for I also had many doubts when I heard about this way to make money with little investment business, but I decided anyway ? and will surprise the money you earn.
How it works
There is something obvious that companies can earn more, sell more, need to know what is best, ?as we? consumers. For large companies is a big mistake to make something that is better, ?they said,? because the consuming public may not have the same opinion ?that is better.? So, better invest in learning these views.
A lot of the companies largest and most important of the world such as Coca-Cola, Dell, Pepsi-Cola, McDonalds, Burger King, Sony, Panasonic, Wal-Mart, Levi?s and GE (To mention just a few) are constantly trying to improve its products and / or services with the primary aim of winning new customers and to keep existing customers.
Here are your benefits
The manufacture, marketing and distribution is very expensive unless you know people want, so these companies annually invest billions of dollars in surveys and market research to determine which products consumers like you and currents I want to buy, why buy this or that product and why discard others.
A lot of that money is paid to ordinary consumers like you and me to respond to simple questions related to products and services everyday.
With the answers they get from us they can determine exactly which products to manufacture and distribute where, which resulted in much more sales and more profits, so they do not care to pay us for our opinions.
What do you think of this option as a business with little upfront investment that can give you good extra money every month? I suggest you check it for yourself.

Ryan O'Neal says he has Stage 2 prostate cancer
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Ryan O'Neal says the prognosis is positive for his recovery from recently diagnosed Stage 2 prostate cancer.
Photos: Ryan O'Neal
The 70-year-old actor said in a statement released through his publicist on Monday that he was "shocked and stunned by the news" but feels fortunate the disease was caught early. He says he's expected to make a full recovery.
A memoir about his romance with actress Farrah Fawcett, "Both of Us: My Life With Farrah," will be published on May 1. Fawcett died in 2009 after a public battle with cancer.
O'Neal says he's grateful for the support of his friends and family and advocates regular exams since early detection is the best defense.
Higher stage numbers mean more extensive disease, with Stage 4 being the highest, according to the National Cancer Institute.

WD's 1TB VelociRaptor HDD gets reviewed: substantial gains, moderate price
Western Digital has expanded its line of desktop-grade VelociRaptors to include a 1TB model that's available now for $320, but those kidding themselves with that whole "250GB is enough" thing can get in for as little as $160. Top-level specs include a 10,000RPM spindle rate and a SATA 6Gb/s interface housed within a 3.5-inch heatsink -- useful for lessening the burden of the drive's thermal output on the rest of the machine. Storage Review's tests reveal that sequential read and write transfer speeds top out around 206MB/s, thermal dissipation is excellent with low power consumption, and that random access has improved compared with it's 600GB predecessor. They consider the new HDD to be a "very appealing value proposition" and "a blend of high performance, storage, capacity, and low cost."
Hot Hardware discovered virtually identical numbers with their tests, but wasn't quite as forgiving when it comes to the cost-per-GB versus 7200RPM hard drives. However, they call this VelociRaptor the "fastest HDD yet" at "nearly double the capacity of previous" model. You can find even more stats and impressions to chew on at the sources below.
