Tim Cook at D10: 'we're going to double down on secrecy on products,' be 'super transparent' on other things

Apple CEO Tim Cook opened AllThingsD's D10 conference this evening with a sit down interview, and provided a slightly surprising answer when questioned about the company's penchant for secrecy. Asked by Walt Mossberg whether Apple would be less secretive going forward, Cook replied that "we're going to double down on secrecy on products." That was said with a bit of a smile on his face, it should be noted, but he was clear that it's something he's serious about. On that same note, however, Cook said that Apple would be "super transparent" when it comes to other things, like its work with suppliers and environmental issues -- something that he hopes will be an area where other companies copy Apple. Later during the interview, Cook noted that acquisitions were one part of the doubling-down on secrecy. "We buy companies," Cook said, "we don't like to make it public. It depends on the amount -- if I don't have to, I won't."

Energy Innovation Grants to Colorado Small Businesses ...

Last week Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet announced that six Colorado small businesses were selected to receive Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Grants of $150,000 by the Department of Energy for projects on power generation from geothermal heat, emissions reduction and increasing fuel efficiency.

The grants are part of $11 million in innovation grants announced today for nearly 70 small businesses across the country. The small businesses selected will be eligible to compete for a second phase of the program for awards up to $1 million over two years.

?These grants speak to the cutting-edge, innovative work being done here in Colorado.? Bennet said. ?Our state has been on the leading edge of clean energy sector job creation, entrepreneurship, and innovation, areas that SBIR resources are targeted to support.? I look forward to seeing these small companies continue to grow, thrive and drive Colorado?s economy.?

In January, Bennet wrote a letter to the Small Business Administration relaying concerns from Colorado small business owners and asking for quick responses on SBIR grant applications. Improving the timeliness of the SBIR grant process is one of many policy recommendations presented to Senator Bennet as part of ?Colorado Competes,? a report prepared by Coloradans for an Innovation Economy that provides a framework designed to make Colorado a place where innovators and entrepreneurs can thrive.

According to the Department of Energy, Colorado businesses selected for the SBIR grants were:

Aqwest LLC in Larkspur received $150,000
Project Title: Magnetocaloric Generator for Geothermal Heat Energy Recovery
This project will develop and demonstrate an innovative magnetocaloric generator for production of electric power from geothermal heat at high thermodynamic efficiency. The project will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels as well as the cost of electric power and GHG emissions.

Cool Energy Inc. in Boulder received $150,000?
Project Title: Low-Temperature Stirling Engine for Geothermal Electricity Generation
A novel power system will be designed for geothermal wells and oil and gas wells. If widely deployed, this approach could replace up to 100 fossil fuel power plants.

Ion Engineering LLC in Boulder received $150,000
Project Title: Carbon Capture Process Simplifications and Performance Improvements Using Novel Polymer Membranes for the Facilitated Transport of CO2
The use of advanced polymer membranes for CO2 capture at power plants can provide an economical and energy efficient means of drastically reducing emissions while continuing to utilize conventional fuel sources for electric power generation. This project will develop materials that can achieve this goal and accelerate the utilization of inexpensive clean energy.

Sporian Microsystems Inc. in Lafayette received $300,000 in grants for two projects
Project Title: Advanced High Temperature Control Rod Position Sensor for Nuclear Power Systems
A novel high temperature ceramic sensor is proposed to help ensure safe operation of existing and future nuclear power plants and nuclear power systems.
Project Title: Advanced Ceramic Materials and Packaging Technologies For Sensors Operable 1800C in Advanced Energy Generation Systems
This project will develop a novel technology based on advanced high temperature materials to support the implementation of new sensor technologies that can increase the fuel efficiency of fossil fuel energy generation systems.

Symbios Technologies LLC in Fort Collins received $150,000
Project Title: Improved Cellulosic Biorefinery Economics via a Novel Catalytic Membrane Reactor for Biomass Hydrolysis
This project will develop, validate and commercialize a proprietary membrane-reactor technology that, for the first time, could enable cost-competitive production of sugars from cellulosic biomass feedstocks for making cellulosic ethanol and related biofuels and other high-value bioproducts allowing the U.S. to meet federal mandates/goals for alternative fuels production.

Tda Research Inc. in Wheat Ridge received $450,000 in grants for three projects
Project Title: Warm Gas Multi-contaminant Removal System
The use environmentally responsible coal-based processes is hindered by the presence of a wide spectrum contaminants present in coal. This project will develop a clean-up technology to remove these contaminants in a cost-effective way to support the widespread utilization of coal in environmentally responsible power generation and production of transportation fuels.
Project Title: High Performance Activated Carbons for Advanced Lead-Acid Battery Hybrid Electric Vehicles
This project will develop high performance carbon additives for the lead-acid batteries used in start/stop HEVs. Start/stop HEVs get 5 ? 8% higher gas mileage than conventional cars with additional cost less than $1000.
Project Title: Enhanced Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts for Conversion of Biomass and Coal to Transportation Fuels
The liquid fuels produced by FT synthesis using coal-derived syngas can provide an immediately viable alternative to crude oil required to help provide energy independence to the U.S. TDA?s new catalyst offers several key benefits that can increase the cost-effectiveness of the FT process.

The Energy Department?s SBIR program supports job-creating small businesses and startup companies nationwide. These grants to small businesses of up to $150,000 are developing new energy technologies that will help to grow America?s economy, create new jobs around the country and improve American competitiveness around the world.? The 67 small businesses will work on 75 innovative research projects ranging from designing better wind turbines to fuel cell technology to coal energy research.

The first week of June is National Fishing and Boating Week. This year, start and end the week?s festivities by taking advantage of one of Florida?s license-free fishing days. Saltwater recreational anglers can fish without a license on June 2 and freshwater recreational fishers on June 9. There couldn?t be a better time to get out on the water and try your hand at some of Florida?s fine fishing on these two Saturdays.

Thirty-four states, including Florida and Georgia, will have license-free fishing days during the June 2 through June 10 National Fishing and Boating Week, a celebration of fishing and boating.

?Florida?s license-free fishing days are an excellent opportunity to share the fun, excitement and togetherness of a fishing trip with the entire family. This also is a great time for experienced anglers to introduce friends to the sport, even if they don?t have a fishing license,? said Nick Wiley, FWC executive director. ?By having these events on weekends, we hope Florida residents and visitors will experience the joy of saltwater and freshwater fishing. We expect many will discover a healthy sport they can enjoy for a lifetime.?

Saltwater anglers can try their hand at catching a red snapper, which will be open for harvest in Gulf and Atlantic state waters and Gulf federal waters on the June 2 saltwater license-free fishing day. Want to stick a little closer to shore? Try your hand at near-shore species such as spotted seatrout or red drum.

Now that school is out or almost out and people are in vacation mode, anglers will find June a great time to introduce a child to fishing or encourage a friend who hasn?t been fishing for a while to get on the water.

Almost everyone in Florida is within 45 minutes of a freshwater fishing hole. Dawn or dusk may be your best fishing times, but if you go midday, seek out the shadows around piers or fallen trees, or look for bass and bream under floating vegetation mats and in other shaded areas to enhance your success.

Fishing is a low-cost, wholesome form of entertainment, which is why the FWC offers four days when a recreational fishing license is not needed. Can?t make the June 2 or June 9 license-free fishing days? The FWC also made Sept. 1 a license-free saltwater fishing day, which not only falls on a holiday weekend, but is during the popular bay scallop and spiny lobster seasons.

Each year, the first Saturday in April and second Saturday in June will be license-free freshwater fishing days.

The state?s abundant resources, coupled with responsible freshwater and saltwater fish management, are why Florida is known as the ?Fishing Capital of the World.?

Chris Hayes Apologizes For Criticism of Calling Fallen Soldiers "Heroes"

MSNBC's Chris Hayes sparked major controversy and debate when he said that he felt uncomfortable using the word "hero" for members of the U.S. military.

Hayes' point was that the word is inadvertently used to start more potentially unjust wars - not unreasonable - but now says his own word choice was poor.

After speaking with a former Marine whose job it was to notify families of the death of soldiers, he said that while he means no disrespect to those who serve us all, the word "seems to be rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war."

Hayes also said that, on the flip side, it is "noble" to join the military.

While a "liberal caricature" like himself would not truly understand "submitting so totally to what the electorate or people in power are going to decide about using your body," Hayes conceded, he saw valor in it.

Nevertheless, Hayes' words, on Memorial Day of all days, caused a predictable furor with some. He issued a statement Monday apologizing for his comments:

In discussing the uses of the word "hero" to describe those members of the armed forces who have given their lives, I don't think I lived up to the standards of rigor, respect and empathy for those affected by the issues we discuss that I've set for myself.

I am deeply sorry for that.

As many have rightly pointed out, it's very easy for me, a TV host, to opine about the people who fight our wars, having never dodged a bullet or guarded a post or walked a mile in their boots.

Of course, that is true of the overwhelming majority of our nation's citizens as a whole. One of the points made during Sunday's show was just how removed most Americans are from the wars we fight, how small a percentage of our population is asked to shoulder the entire burden and how easy it becomes to never read the names of those who are wounded and fight and die, to not ask questions about the direction of our strategy in Afghanistan, and to assuage our own collective guilt about this disconnect with a pro-forma ritual that we observe briefly before returning to our barbecues.

But in seeking to discuss the civilian-military divide and the social distance between those who fight and those who don't, I ended up reinforcing it, conforming to a stereotype of a removed pundit whose views are not anchored in the very real and very wrenching experience of this long decade of war. And for that I am truly sorry.

Americans held over death of Irish girl in Japan

Two Americans have been arrested in connection the death of a female Irish exchange student in Japan, police in Tokyo were reported as saying on Sunday.

Nicola Furlong, 21, from County Wexford, Ireland, was found unconscious in a hotel room early on Thursday, hours after attending a concert by the rapper Nicki Minaj, the Irish Times said.

She was later confirmed dead at a hospital, where an autopsy indicated she may have been strangled.

The Irish Times said Furlong is believed to have gone to Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku, a business and shopping hub in central Tokyo, after midnight with her female friend after the two met the American pair.

The Daily Yomiuri in Japan said police arrested?two American?men - a musician, 19, and a dancer, 23 - on suspicion of sexually assaulting Furlong's friend and fellow student, 21, in a taxi on the way to the hotel.

It said police suspect?the men know how Furlong subsequently died.

The Japan Times said the 19-year-old suspect was alone in a room with Furlong when hotel staff went up to probe a complaint about loud noise.

None of the reports could be confirmed by msnbc.com.

Furling was attending Takasaki City University of Economics in Gunma Prefecture.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? Space station astronauts floated into the Dragon on Saturday, a day after its heralded arrival as the world's first commercial supply ship.

NASA astronaut Donald Pettit, the first one inside the docked capsule, said the Dragon looks like it carries about as much cargo as his pickup truck back home in Houston. It has the smell of a brand new car, he added.

"I spent quite a bit of time poking around in here this morning, just looking at the engineering and the layout, and I'm very pleased," Pettit said from the brilliant white compartment.

To protect against possible debris, Pettit wore goggles, a mask and a caver's light as he slid open the hatch of the newest addition to the International Space Station. The complex sailed 250 miles above the Tasman Sea, just west of New Zealand, as he and his crewmates made their grand entrance. The atmosphere was clean; no dirt or other particles were floating around.

"This event isn't just a simple door opening between two spacecraft ? it opens the door to a future in which U.S. industry can and will deliver huge benefits for U.S. space exploration," the Space Frontier Foundation, an advocacy group, said in a statement.

The California-based SpaceX ? formally Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? is the first private company to send a vessel to the space station. It's run by Elon Musk, a billionaire who helped create PayPal and founded the electric car company Tesla Motors.

Now that the space shuttles are retired, NASA is handing over orbital delivery work to American business in order to focus on bigger and better objectives, such as getting astronauts to asteroids and Mars. The space agency hopes astronaut ferry trips will follow soon; SpaceX contends its Dragons could be carrying space station astronauts up and down within three or four years.

Flight controllers were ecstatic to be at the cusp of this new commercial era.

"It's great to see you guys inside Dragon. It looks great," Mission Control radioed.

The six space station residents have until the middle of next week to unload Dragon's groceries and refill the capsule with science experiments and equipment for return to Earth. Unlike all the other cargo ships that fly to the orbiting lab, the Dragon is designed for safe re-entry. It will be freed on Thursday and aim for a Pacific splashdown.

The Dragon contains 1,000 pounds of food, clothes, batteries and other provisions. It will bring back 1,400 pounds' worth of gear.

Until now, only major governments have launched cargo ships to the space station. Russia, Japan and Europe will keep providing supplies, and Russia will continue to sell rocket rides to U.S. astronauts until SpaceX or other companies are ready to take over. Several American enterprises are competing for the honor.

Pettit noted that the Dragon ? 19 feet tall and 12 feet wide ? is roomier than the Russian Soyuz spacecraft he rode up in.

"Flying up in a human-rated Dragon is not going to be an issue," he assured reporters during a news conference.

The unmanned bell-shaped capsule was launched Tuesday from Cape Canaveral aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Pettit used the space station's robot arm Friday to snare the craft.

During Saturday's news conference, Pettit played down his role in the historic event. He noted that the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, which opened up America's Western frontier, was commemorated by the pounding of a golden spike.

"This is kind of the equivalent of the golden spike," he said. "And one other interesting detail ? nobody remembers who pounded that golden spike in. The important thing is to remember that the railroad was completed and was now open for use."

Success or failure of the new commercial space effort ? the cornerstone of President Barack Obama's vision for NASA ? does not hinge on a single mission but rather many missions over many years, Pettit stressed.

"Commercial spaceflight will blossom due to its own merits," he said.

Aiken High's Newman signs to play college football

Everybody makes mistakes. High school football players are certainly no exception to that universal truth.

It was Spencer Newman's ability to learn from his mistakes that allowed the former Aiken High School linebacker to sign a letter of intent to play college football.

"They liked my game film. They would see how I would mess up and then make a correction on the next series or play to improve," Newman said of Jireh Prep, the junior college in Matthews, N.C., that he signed with on Friday. "This is a blessing. It's something I've always wanted to do."

After a senior campaign that included 27 tackles, an interception and fumble recovery, Newman said several factors weighed into his decision. A big reason he picked Jireh Prep over other schools that had shown interest - including Southern Technical College and Southern Virginia University, among others - was the community.

Newman said he was pleased with what he saw, especially the environment among players. He was confident that Jireh Prep was a place he could concentrate on getting work done - on the field and in the classroom. Beyond that, it would allow him to improve in both arenas and be better suited to transfer to a four-year school.

"They just sent 16 guys to Division I, Division II and NAIA combined," said Newman, who is already considering Coastal Carolina, South Carolina State and Elizabeth City College as potential destinations. "Seeing guys go to other schools was a big reason (to choose Jireh Prep)."

Another reason Newman liked Jireh Prep was its location. Matthews is approximately 150 miles from Aiken, which is far enough for him to confidently embark out on his own but close enough for family and friends to watch him play.

At Jireh Prep, Newman intends to pursue a degree in criminal justice with a minor in music. He said a criminal justice degree would offer him a variety of jobs in the field of law enforcement. And taking courses in music is just what comes naturally.

"Growing up in the church, I've been playing music my whole life," Newman said. "I love music. I love it as much as playing football."

Football is the main area of emphasis for Newman at Jireh Prep. He said the Warriors' coaches have told him there are four linebackers on the roster, and he'll have the opportunity to compete for a starting position immediately. He said the coaches liked the versatility his speedy 6-foot, 190-pound frame offered and could potentially shift him to free safety.

Regardless of where he plays, Newman is focused on getting better to help his chances of playing for a four-year program.

"I want to improve on my game," he said, adding that he plans to try and add some bulk and improve his strength. "I want to learn from the coaches and players there and get an education."
