Hot chocolate - Food of the gods! The soulful, superfood that's good ...

(NaturalNews) From happy childish squeals of delight during a snow storm to a cozy winter corner wrapped in the seductive lusciousness of sweet warmth, nothing touches the heart or belly like a cup of delicious hot chocolate. The food of the gods, according to ancient Mayans has recently taken center stage on the medical scene because of its amazing healing properties; making sacred chocolate one of the best loved, and most devoured superfoods on the planet. And because earth is the only place you can get chocolate, you may as well stay healthy and stick around to drink more.If you're addicted to chocolate, it's because your body knows a good thing. The healthy benefits from chocolate are derived from high levels of antioxidants that increase nitric oxide levels in the blood vessels, enhancing circulation. Additionally, chocolate reduces blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, protects the retina, enhances moods, stops coughing, increases blood flow to the brain, prevents diabetes and protects skin against UV damage. Bet you never knew eating chocolate and vegetables were both good for you when you were a kid.Natural, unsweetened and Dutch processed cocoa are both tangy, and vaguely bitter tasting; however, natural cocoa is slightly acidic. The acidity helps balance the body's pH and retain the full impact of its health benefits. Dutch processed cocoa is treated with an alkalizing agent to smooth the taste; removing the acidity. The process destroys many of the flavanols, reducing its superfood powers.Originally, ancient Olmecs and Mayans made hot chocolate by mixing ground cocoa beans with water, wine and chile pepper. Over time, sugar and milk became common additions. Today, nations around the world have their special hot chocolate mixes and you can take advantage of some of them for treating various health conditions.

Consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper to help clear chest congestion or an upset stomach. A small piece of raw or candied ginger improves blood flow and circulation, calming nausea. A dash of red wine helps the heart. Antitussive properties of honey relieve a cough. Adding cinnamon and replacing sweetening with stevia helps control blood sugar. A sprig of mint or basil relieves a case of acid reflux.

There are as many hot chocolate recipes as there are hot chocolate aficionados. Adjust as you like for quantity and richness. This is a wonderful recipe for vegans or for those who prefer real cream. Makes one serving.

In a 14-16 oz. mug add two well-rounded teaspoons of cocoa powder, preferably a premium, unsweetened organic chocolate. Heat 12 oz. coconut milk. Remove from the heat just before it starts boiling and pour a very small amount into the cup, stirring with a spoon or whisk until the cocoa melts. Add the rest of the coconut milk, leaving room for additional cream. Add a pinch of sea salt to the steaming mug, one cinnamon stick, about half a teaspoon of vanilla extract or a pinch of raw vanilla powder, stevia to taste, and organic or raw heavy cream, plain or whipped.

Coconut whipped cream may be substituted and is easy to make from a chilled can of coconut cream. Or add marshmallows, nutmeg, or a tiny pinch of cayenne.

For a richer chocolate taste, substitute bittersweet, Mexican or white chocolate for the cocoa powder. Between one and a half to two ounces of chocolate makes a comparable cup of chocolat chaud.

Check the links below for various international hot chocolate recipes such as Belgian, French, Aztec, Mexican, Italian and Jamaican. Each provides its own distinctive twist.

Obama Shops Local Bookstore for Small Business Saturday

WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Barack Obama and his daughters Sasha and Malia did some holiday shopping near Washington today. Dropping in on One More Page Books in Arlington, Va., Obama spent the afternoon outside the White House to promote Small Business Saturday.

The family spent roughly 20 minutes inside the store, spending some of the time quietly conversing with locals. Obama reportedly brought a shopping list on his BlackBerry smartphone.

"Preparation, you know," the president told shop owner Eileen McGervey. "That's how I shop. Michelle, she can go wandering around."

PHOTOS: Malia and Sasha's Cutest Moments

The White House says 15 children's books were purchased at the establishment, that will be given as gifts to family. This is the second year the president has visited a bookstore for the occasion.

Wedged between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday was launched in 2010 to focus on independently owned brick and mortar shops. The occasion was conceived by the American Express corporation, but has since been largely endorsed by business groups and politicians. American Express claims 100 million shoppers hit small businesses last year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.

On Twitter the president would later add, "My family & I started our holiday shopping at a local bookstore on #SmallBizSat. I hope you'll join & shop small this holiday season. -bo"

A member of the traveling press asked the president if this was his effort to keep the United States from going over the looming fiscal cliff.

"Come on, we're doing Christmas shopping," he responded. "Happy Thanksgiving, folks."

This article is part of our coverage of the?2012 Net Impact Conference?in Baltimore. It originally appeared on?Triple Pundit.

For some companies, ?corporate social responsibility? is an after-thought or marketing tool; for others, it?s core to their business.

Humana, a Fortune 100 healthcare company, recently?got serious about its commitments and formalized a CSR program in 2009, as we learned at the Net Impact Conference in Baltimore.

Humana started as a nursing home company. Now, the company markets and administers health insurance services in all 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico.

Humana has been socially responsible for decades, establishing an ethics program in the mid-?90s, encouraging employees (or ?associates?) to volunteer in their communities, and contributing hundreds of millions of dollars to charitable causes through the?Humana Foundation.

This year, it?made headlines?for becoming the first U.S. health insurer to follow?Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines?for sustainability reporting.

One of the primary ways it encourages customers to stay healthy is through the design of play?leveraging behavioral economics, mobile technology, gamification and social media.

Here are a few examples:

Video Games:?Humana partnered with video game developer?Ubisoft?to develop Humana-branded fitness content for??Your Shape?: Fitness Evolved 2012,? ?a workout program available on?Xbox Kinect?that offers players more than 90 hours of fitness activities, including cardio boxing, jumprope and yoga.

Online Games:?FamScape?is?a online game that encourages more physical activity by families.?There is also the?Humana Horsepower Challenge, in which students are given pedometers to keep track of their steps. Teams of school systems compete against each other, and kids who are most physically active earn rewards to accessorize their horse avatars.?Students in the program did six times as much physical activity?than before the program started.

Toys: The company created a prototype of ?Grand 2 Grand,? wirelessly connected teddy bears that are designed to let?grandparents and grandkids communicate with each other. When one person hugs a bear, the other lights up and vibrates.

Community: Earlier this year, Humana and the Humana Foundation announced a three-year partnership withKaBOOM!??to build more than 50 multi-generational playgrounds in communities across the country.

Bicycles:?Humana, Trek Bicycle Corporation and Crispin Porter + Bogusky created the?B-cycle?bikesharing system, which?measures the distance traveled on each ride and helps bikers keeps track of calories burned and carbon emissions avoided. Members can review their health and transport information on a personal B-cycle web page.

Mobile Apps: Humana offers a couple of health-focused iPhone apps.?GoldWalker?is?an adventure and strategy game where players have to move around in the real world to travel through the virtual world of towns and mining camps to accomplish tasks and find gold.?Colorfall?allows players to exercise their body and their brain in a color-matching game, resembling Tetris. Players must move around the physical world to take photos of different colored items to complete the game.

Interactive: The?Humana Well-Being Tour?stops off at state fairs and other community gatherings to offer?live in-person gameplay. Guests can play the ?Your Shape? game on Xbox Kinect, get a biometric screening, take a spin on a stationary bike, and receive a free pedometer through the WalkIt Program.

Golf: Humana signed on as title sponsor of an annual PGA tournament, formerly the Bob Hope Desert Classic, to promote well-being.?The?Humana Challenge?tracks the steps of spectators through itsHumanaWalkit?program.?The event formed as the result of an eight-year partnership between Humana and the William J. Clinton Foundation. This year, it?raised?more than $2 million?in donations to benefit?40 local charities.

The?2012 Humana Challenge was named ?Sports Event of the Year??By SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, beating out other sporting dynamos like the 2011 NBA Finals and Super Bowl XLVI.?During the event the company also supports other healthy activities with ancillary events like a 5-mile walk and a farmer?s market.?Jim Turner, director of corporate communications, says it?s ?well-being, with a side of golf.?

In other words, health, with a side of play.

Groups Meet To Combat Child Obesity Your Health Journal | Your ...

From Record Net?..

Front-line professionals in the battle against childhood obesity will tell you they have an uphill fight, but the war is not lost. In a region with among the worst outcomes in the nation for this far-reaching epidemic, a lot is being done to turn things around.

About 60 nurses, doctors, school officials, health educators and community outreach workers from throughout San Joaquin County joined forces Monday evening for the first Strategies to Address Childhood Obesity program organized by the Health Plan of San Joaquin and HealthNet Community Solutions.

?We believe healthy kids are our future. We decided the only way we were going to get this county healthy was to collaborate,? said Terri Howell, director of HealthNet Community Solutions. The California-based health insurer will become more active locally Jan. 1, when it becomes a Medi-Cal-managed care provider in San Joaquin County, in competition with Health Plan.

In a resource-poor region such as the San Joaquin Valley ? at least when it comes to health services ? collaboration among public and private organizations has shown to be a successful path leading to meaningful change.

William Mitchell, the county?s Public Health Services director, spoke of the broad coalition of stakeholders that make up the Obesity and Chronic Disease Prevention Task Force, the Healthier San Joaquin Coalition and active asthma and diabetes work groups.

?In response to the growing need, Public Health works closely with schools, faith-based organizations, after-school programs and retailers. It?s a broad coalition of stakeholders,? Mitchell said.

Palestinian farmers turn to organic farming

NUS JUBAIL, West Bank (AP) ? The Palestinian olive harvest, an ancient autumn ritual in the West Bank, is going upscale.

In an emerging back-to-the-land movement, Palestinian farmers are turning the rocky hills of the West Bank into organic olive groves, selling their oil to high-end grocers in the U.S. and Europe.

The move is a reflection of the growing global demand for natural, sustainable and fairly traded products, albeit with a distinct Palestinian twist. The hardships faced by local farmers, ranging from a lack of rainfall to Israeli trade obstacles, mean that organic growing is one of the few ways Palestinians have to compete in outside markets.

"The Palestinian future is in the land," said farmer Khader Khader, 31, as he stood among his organic olives in the northern West Bank village of Nus Jubail.

Organic farming has grown into a thriving business, by Palestinian standards, since it first was introduced in the West Bank in 2004. Now, at least $5 million worth of organic olive oil is exported annually ? about half of all Palestinian commercial oil exports, said Nasser Abu Farha of the Canaan Fair Trade Association, one of the companies that sells high-end organic olive oil to distributors abroad.

The West Bank-based company purchases the oil at above market prices and pays what's called a "social premium" ? extra money to farming cooperatives to improve their communities.

About 930 farmers have fair-trade and organic certification, while another 140 are "converting" their land ? a two- to three-year process during which they stop using chemical fertilizers and pest controls while monitors from Canaan and the Palestine Fair Trade Association provide training and check soil for chemical levels.

Their work is overseen by the Swiss-based Institute for Market Ecology, which is accredited to certify organic products for the U.S., E.U., and Japan. Hundreds more farmers are simply certified as fair-trade, where they and their workers are paid decent wages for their work and produce.

The trade is tiny when compared to major olive growers like Spain, Italy and Greece. But it's significant for Palestinians, for whom harvesting olives is a cultural tradition that gathers even the most urbanized families.

An average of 17,000 tons of olive oil is produced in the West Bank every year by thousands of farmers, according to aid group Oxfam, which works on the olive industry. Most is for local or personal use, and only about 1,000 tons is exported a year, though that number is likely higher since many farmers sell oil informally through relatives abroad, Abu Farha said.

Organic farmers hope the high-end trade will keep them on their lands, despite difficult odds and high overhead costs.

Palestinians seek the West Bank as the heartland of a future independent state. Most of the 2.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank live under a semi-autonomous government. But Israel, which captured the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast war, wields overall control. Roughly 500,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank and neighboring east Jerusalem, taking away resources.

The situation makes exporting difficult for Palestinian farmers. Outside markets for fresh produce aren't profitable. Goods must cross through Israeli-controlled export crossings with security measures that cause delays, lowering quality through exposure to sunlight and constant reloading from one truck to another.

Farmers face other problems. More than 120 Jewish settlements dot the West Bank, often encroaching on Palestinian farmlands or preventing farmers from reaching their land. According to U.N. estimates, nearly 10 percent of Palestinian farmland falls on the "Israeli" side of the separation barrier Israel has built to prevent militants from entering from the West Bank to carry out attacks.

Israel also controls more than 80 percent of the West Bank's water in lopsided sharing agreements, said Palestinian water official Ribhi al-Sheik. In other areas dilapidated water pipes have wasteful leaks. Most farmers depend on rain and unlicensed wells, depleting already-stressed aquifers. In some parts, Israeli military authorities also ban rain-collecting cisterns. Badly planned Palestinian towns have paved over fertile lands.

Israeli military spokesman Guy Inbar said the long export process was solely for security reasons and "not intended to harm" exports, noting that Palestinians export some 100,000 tons of fresh produce a year. He said Palestinians access more water than what is allowed for under sharing agreements and that farmers with permits are able to reach land on the other side of the separation barrier.

The challenges sparked a new way of thinking: Palestinians had to make finished goods that could survive the rough growing conditions and lengthy journey to outside markets.

Fair-trade, organic products that can be rain-fed, particularly olives, were the perfect solution.

"It's the future of Palestinian exports. The future is in added value, through environmental and social accountability," said Abu Farha of Canaan Fair Trade. "People want to know: "Where is this oil coming from? Whose life is it changing?"

The changes are visible in Nus Jubail, a village crowded with olives and pines, its 400 residents in houses with blue doors and rooftops sheltered by grape arbors. A decade ago, most residents pressed their oil for personal use. Little was sold commercially and prices were low, said Khader, the farmer.

Around 2004, agricultural activists formed the Palestinian Fair Trade Association, seeking out farmers across the West Bank. They persuaded Khader to establish an organic cooperative of five farmers, allowing them to collectively press their olives and sell better-priced oil.

During the three-year conversion process, Khader and his colleagues were taught to grow olives without chemicals, pruning and plowing instead of using herbicides and fermenting sheep droppings into fertilizer. Once certified, Khader and his partners sold their oil above market prices, attracting other recruits. Now 18 of the village's 30 farmers are organic.

This year, organic oil is selling for about $5.40 a liter ? a dollar higher than conventional oil, said Abu Farha of Canaan Fair Trade, which purchases much of the oil. Other independent farmers are selling directly to consumers for $9 a liter, far above market price.

Farmers are going organic on other products, such as maftoul, a chewy sun-dried staple resembling couscous, as well as dried almonds and a savory spice blend of thyme, hyssop and other herbs known as zaatar.

But high-end oil is key.

In Whole Foods supermarkets in New York and New Jersey, it's sold under the "Alter Eco" brand, Abu Farha said. It's in Sainsbury's in Britain, and in boutique shops globally through Canaan and other distributers. Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap, a popular organic, fair traded vegan soap, sources 95 percent of its oil ? some 165 tons ? from Palestinian growers, the soap company said.

Even so, challenges abound. Palestinian oil production is irregular because they can't irrigate their crops and export costs are still high. Abu Farha of Canaan said some farmers have cheated by mixing conventional oil into their products.

Still, the move toward organic, sustainable farming is an important, elegant fight.

"I don't throw rocks," said farmer Khader, referring to young men who frequently hurl stones during demonstrations. He pointed to his rock-built terraces. "I use them to build our future."

(AP) ? Asian stock markets sank Friday, weighed down by fears over the so-called U.S. "fiscal cliff" that investors see as a big threat to the economic recovery.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.9 percent to 8,757.39 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.5 percent to 21,453.49. South Korea's Kospi retreated 1 percent to 1,894.85 and Australia's S&P ASX 200 dropped 0.5 percent to 4,462.20.

The slump in Asia mirrored the trend in markets worldwide as investors have refocused on challenges to the world economy following U.S. President Barack Obama's re-election. Many worry that gridlock in Washington will prevent the president and Congress from reaching a deal before the package of tax increases and government spending cuts kicks in on Jan. 1.

Declines were more muted in mainland China, where investors were awaiting a number of economic indicators that would provide the latest update on the slowdown in the world's second biggest economy.

The Shanghai Composite Index dipped 0.3 percent to 2,065.92, while the Shenzhen Composite Index lost 0.3 percent to 828.78.

The Chinese benchmarks briefly swung into positive territory after a report released just after trading started showed October inflation had eased to 1.7 percent, giving room for more stimulus. But investors stayed cautious as they awaited industrial production, fixed asset investment and retail sales figures later in the day.

"Markets may stabilize and possibly rebound on Chinese data for October, which we expect to show acceleration of output amid muted price pressures," strategists at Credit Agricole CIB wrote in a research note.

On Wall Street, the Dow closed down nearly 1 percent to 12,811.32, bringing its two-day loss to 434 points. The Standard and Poor's 500 index fell 1.2 percent to 1,377.51 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite slipped 1.4 percent to 2,895.58.

In currencies, the euro weakened to $1.2748 from to $1.2750 late Thursday. The dollar strengthened to 79.49 Japanese yen from 79.38 yen.

Crude oil for December delivery was up 12 cents to $85.22 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 65 cents to close at $85.09 on Thursday.

Samsung Galaxy S III dethrones iPhone 4S as smartphone sales champ for Q3 2012

Samsung Galaxy S III preview: hands-on with the next Android superphone

The Galaxy S III has overtaken Apple's iPhone 4S for the first time ever to become the top selling smartphone for Q3 2012, according to Strategy Analytics. Of course, serendipity is also likely at play, as the iPhone 5 hit shelves towards the end of that period, likely cannibalizing 4S sales -- in fact, the market research firm thinks Apple's new top handset will likely trump Samsung in Q4. That means the Korean giant may have to step up its game, or it'll just be keeping the top spot warm for its arch-competitor. Check the PR after fold for more info.

(AP) ? Someone has to introduce the president.

On Monday, the final day of the presidential campaign, President Barack Obama, however, didn't bring along an opening act. He brought along two main acts.

Bruce Springsteen. Jay-Z. Theirs wasn't an introduction, it was pop culture moment.

The Boss was spending the entire day with Obama, traveling on Air Force One from Madison, Wis., to Columbus, Ohio, and then to Des Moines, Iowa, where Obama planned a coda for his campaign, a finale where his run for the presidency began five years ago.

Jay-Z boomed his way into Columbus's Nationwide Arena, performing a rendition of his hit "99 Problems" with a political twist for a crowd estimated by fire officials at more than 15,000 people. He changed a key R-rated word to make his own political endorsement. "I got 99 problems but Mitt ain't one," he sang.

"They tell the story of what our country is," Obama said of the two performers, "but also of what it should be and what it can be."

Springsteen added a whole new sense of vigor, even giddiness, to the Obama entourage, with many of the president's aides and advisers clearly star-struck by the rocker's presence.

Springsteen, in jeans, black boots, a work shirt, vest and leather jacket, was not wearing the typical Air Force One attire. But the Obama camp has left formality aside; many aides are growing beards through Election Day and ties have been left behind in favor of sweaters for the chilly outdoor events during the last hours of the campaign.

Asked if there was any downside to using celebrity glitz instead of substance to drive voters to the polls in the final days, Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki laughed. "I think Bruce Springsteen might be offended by you calling him glitzy," she said.

"Bruce Springsteen, and some other celebrities who have been helping us, reach a broad audience that sometimes tune out what's being said by politicians," she said.

As Psaki spoke to reporters at the back of the plane, Obama was up front and on the phone with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie discussing the recovery from Superstorm Sandy. Christie, who says he has attended more than 100 Springsteen concerts, said Obama then handed the phone to Springsteen, a New Jersey native whose songs often have been tributes to his youth in the state.

Upon landing in Columbus, Springsteen told a reporter that it was his first trip on Air Force One. Grinning, he said, "It was pretty cool." As for New Jersey, he said, "I'm feeling pretty hopeful" that the state's hard-hit shore will recover.

In Madison and Columbus, Springsteen serenaded audiences with renditions of top anthems "No Surrender," ''Promised Land" and "Land of Hope and Dreams." But he also has a custom-made campaign song named after the Obama motto "Forward" ? which he acknowledged was "not the best I've ever written."

"How many things rhyme with Obama?" he asked.

Obama, no doubt, didn't mind.

"I'm going to be fine with Bruce Springsteen on the last day that I'll ever campaign," he said above the din of the crowd.

"That's not a bad way to bring it home. With The Boss. With The Boss."

Mom of 'Modern Family' teen star accused of abuse

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The mother of "Modern Family" star Ariel Winter has temporarily lost custody of the actress amid allegations she's been abusive to the teenager.

Court records claim Winter's mother, Chrisoula Workman, has been physically and emotionally abusive to her 14-year-old daughter, who plays Alex Dunphy on the hit ABC comedy.

The October order, first reported Wednesday by celebrity website TMZ, requires Workman to stay away from Winter until a Nov. 20 hearing. Records show Winter's sister filed for guardianship and was appointed her temporary guardian, but will not have access to her earnings.

The records describe Workman's abuse as consisting of slapping and name-calling.

Reached by phone, Workman said she was in the process of hiring an attorney.

Winter has appeared in films and TV shows since she was 7.
