It's Not All About Sex: Why Friendship Is The Secret To A Long ...
Researchers found that valuing your friendship with your partner helps create relationships with more commitment, more love and greater sexual satisfaction.
People who put more emphasis on trying to satisfy their personal needs or desires through their relationship are less likely to sustain the bond in the longer term.
Romantic relationships are, at their core, friendships,? said the study?s lead author Laura VanderDrift, of Purdue University in Indiana.
As such, it may be the case that valuing that aspect of the relationship fortifies the romantic relationship ? and serves as a buffer against breaking up.
The results indicate that valuing the friendship aspect of a romantic relationship is important to relationship quality.
It seems likely that placing greater importance on the friendship component of the relationship relative to other components (e.g. sex) may promote lasting relationships.
The psychologists wrote that relationship failures can lead to negative emotions, feelings of insecurity and reduced physical health.
But they added that friendship is a ?defining characteristic of love? and suggested that understanding the causes of break ups could help couples avoid that fate.
The team, who report their findings in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, conducted two experiments.
The first involved 190 students who had been in a relationship for an average of 18 months at the start of the study.
They filled out questionnaires designed to assess the amount of investment they put into their relationship generally, different aspects of their relationship and their future hopes.
Four months later they were contacted again, by which time a quarter (27 per cent) were no longer with the same partner, and asked further questions about their relationship.
People who had scored highly for investing in the friendship aspect of their relationship were also more likely to score highly on romantic commitment, love and sexual satisfaction. They also tended to see increases in these elements over the four months of the study.
Crucially, those who put the most effort into building a strong friendship with their partner were less likely to have broken up.
The second experiment involved 184 students, who had been in relationships for 16 months on average.
They were asked to rate the value they attach to aspects of a relationship such as companionship, security, sex, self-improvement and experiencing new things on a scale of one (not at all important) to nine (extremely important).
People who rated the need for companionship and affiliation highly also tended to score higher for romantic commitment and sexual fulfilment.
Those who rated personal needs as more important did not score as highly on commitment or sexual fulfilment.
The authors said that further research could look at the specific kinds of behaviour that influence the link between strong friendships and lasting relationships.

Egypt's leader declares emergency after clashes kill dozens
CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi declared a month-long state of emergency in three cities along the Suez Canal where dozens of people have been killed over the past four days in protests that his allies say are designed to overthrow him.
Seven people were shot dead and hundreds were injured in Port Said on Sunday during the funerals of 33 people killed there when locals angered by a court decision went on the rampage as anti-government protests spread around the country.
A total of 49 people have been killed since Thursday and Mursi's opponents, who accuse his Islamist Muslim Brotherhood of betraying the revolution that ousted long-time ruler Hosni Mubarak, have called for more demonstrations on Monday.
"Down, down Mursi, down down the regime that killed and tortured us!" people in Port Said chanted as the coffins of those killed on Saturday were carried through the streets.
Mursi, who was elected in June, is trying to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary poll in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy. Repeated eruptions of violence have weighed heavily on the Egyptian pound.
In a televised address, he said a nightly curfew would be introduced in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez, starting Monday.
Several hundred people protested in Ismailia, Suez and Port Said after the announcement, in which Mursi also called for a dialogue with top politicians. Activists in the three cities vowed to defy the curfew in protest at the decision.
"The protection of the nation is the responsibility of everyone. We will confront any threat to its security with force and firmness within the remit of the law," he said, offering condolences to families of the victims.
In Cairo the newly appointed Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim was ejected from the funeral of one of the police officers who died during Saturday's clashes in Port Said, according to witnesses and police sources.
A police officer at the funeral said many of his colleagues blame the interior minister for the deaths of at least two policemen during Saturday's clashes as he did not allow the police there to carry weapons and were only given teargas bombs.
SECURITY MEASURES
The violence has exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Mursi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader.
Distancing itself from the latest flare-ups, the opposition National Salvation Front said Mursi should have acted far sooner to impose extra security measures that would end the violence.
"Of course we feel the president is missing the real problem on the ground which is his own polices," spokesman Khaled Dawoud told Reuters. "His call to implement emergency law was an expected move given what is going on, namely thuggery and criminal actions."
The Front, formed late last year when Mursi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and call for more protests if its demands are not met, including for an early presidential vote
Mursi had invited 11 political parties, including Islamist, liberal and leftist groups, along with four top politicians to a meeting on Monday at 6 p.m. local time (1600 GMT)to work out a basis for a fruitful dialogue that would resolve the political crisis, according to a statement from his office.
The Front said it will meet earlier on Monday to discuss the invitation.
But some of the Front's top leaders had already announced their position. Hamdeen Sabahy, a leftist politician and former presidential candidate who was one of the four invited by Mursi, said he would not attend Monday's meeting "unless the bloodshed stops and the people's demands are met."
Sabahy's Popular Current movement said in a statement the protests are due to economic and political problems that need to be addressed by policies and not through "security solutions".
Front leader Mohamed ElBaradie described the dialogue "a waste of time" on his Twitter account.
State television said seven people died from gunshot wounds in Port Said on Sunday. Port Said's head of hospitals, Abdel Rahman Farag, told Reuters more than 400 people had suffered from teargas inhalation, while 38 were wounded by gunshots.
Gunshots had killed many of the 33 who died on Saturday when residents rioted after a court sentenced 21 people, mostly from the Mediterranean port, to death for their role in deadly soccer violence at a stadium there last year.
A military source said many people in Port Said, which lies next to the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, possess guns because they do not trust the authorities to protect them. However it was not clear who was behind the deaths and injuries.
In Cairo, police fired teargas at dozens at protesters throwing stones and petrol bombs in a fourth day of clashes over what demonstrators there and in other cities say is a power grab by Islamists two years after Mubarak was overthrown.
In Ismailia city, which lies on the Suez Canal between the cities of Suez and Port Said, police also fired teargas at protesters attacking a police station with petrol bombs and stones, according to witnesses and a security source there.
'KNEE-JERK REACTION'
Most of the deaths since Thursday were in Port Said and Suez, both cities where the army has now been deployed.
Heba Morayef of Human Rights Watch in Cairo said a state of emergency reintroduced laws that gave police sweeping powers of arrest "purely because (people) look suspicious".
"It is a classic knee-jerk reaction to think the emergency law will help bring security," she said. "It gives so much discretion to the Ministry of Interior that it ends up causing more abuse which in turn causes more anger."
The opposition Popular Current and other groups have called for more protests on Monday to mark what was one of the bloodiest days of the 2011 uprising.
Anti-Mursi protesters who have been camped out in Tahrir Square for weeks also demonstrated against Mursi's move to impose a state of emergency, reviving memories of Mubarak's era when emergency codes were in place for three decades and used to crush dissent and detain people without charge.
Protesters say Mursi has betrayed the revolution's aims.
"None of the revolution's goals have been realised," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.
"Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."
Clashes also erupted in other streets near the square. The U.S. and British embassies, both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday, normally a working day.
The army, Egypt's interim ruler until Mursi's election, was sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, which both lie on the Suez canal. In Suez, at least eight people were killed in clashes with police.
Many ordinary Egyptians are frustrated by the violence that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.
"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30, referring to those gathered in Tahrir. "They are thugs destroying the country."

Anthony's 9 3s, 42 points lead Knicks over Hawks
NEW YORK (AP) ? Carmelo Anthony was so locked in, he didn't even realize how far he was shooting from.
Those 3-pointers put him in the record book. A drive to the basket put the Knicks back in the win column.
Anthony tied a franchise record with nine 3-pointers, then converted a go-ahead, three-point play with 12.5 seconds left to cap a 42-point night and lead New York to a 106-104 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday.
The Hawks shot a season-high 60 percent from the field but had their three-game winning streak snapped when Josh Smith, burned on Anthony's basket, missed a 3-pointer on Atlanta's final possession.
Anthony wasn't aware of the record, but he clearly knew his shot was on. So did the Hawks, and Smith may have been expecting a jumper on the last possession and was caught flat-footed when Anthony went right by him.
"It was just a matter of me just taking them shots and making them," Anthony said. "I know I'm capable of making them, but when I'm making them from the outside, from the perimeter, it opens up the game that much more, for myself, for my teammates, and that's what happened tonight."
Amare Stoudemire and J.R. Smith each had 18 points for the Knicks, who were 16 of 27 (59 percent) from 3-point range. Raymond Felton had 12 points and 10 assists in his second game back after a 10-game absence with a broken right pinky.
Jeff Teague scored 27 points for the Hawks. Smith added 20 and Al Horford had 16.
Anthony matched the Knicks' record for 3-pointers held by John Starks, Latrell Sprewell (twice) and Toney Douglas. He also tied Richie Guerin's franchise record with his 29th straight 20-point game. He pulled up for the final one during a streak of three in a row in the first half from the 'G' in the wording "Madison Square Garden" ? a good 4 feet behind the line.
"One of them heat check shots at that time," he said, claiming he was unaware where he was standing and using the term for a player launching from extremely deep or extremely quickly to test how hot he really is.
Asked if he'd ever made 10 3s in a game, Anthony responded by asking how many he made last summer in the Olympics.
Indeed, he was 10 of 12 in a 37-game point game against Nigeria ? not exactly a quality team such as the Hawks.
His biggest basket came nowhere near the arc.
The Knicks came out of a timeout down by one and Anthony found Smith on him after he was played much of the final period by DeShawn Stevenson, a rugged defender who had frustrated him into a potentially costly technical foul.
Anthony blew by Smith to the left, getting fouled as he laid the ball in.
"He took what the defense gave him," Felton said. "Josh Smith kind of lifted his leg a little bit and then he attacked the back leg, got to the basket and got the and-one. He's been doing a great job of finishing games for us and closing out and hitting big shots."
The ensuing free throw made it 106-104 and Anthony nearly came up with a steal on Atlanta's final possession, but the ball deflected out to Smith, who had a good look that was long.
"It was a good look. It just didn't go down," Smith said. "It was really a back-and-forth game. For us to be able to have a chance at making a game-winning shot or a tying field goal towards the end of that game (with) how well they shot the 3, lets us know that we had a pretty good basketball game ourselves. We just fell a little short."
A night after an ugly 97-80 loss, the Knicks had no problems on offense, though could never get much cushion against the speedy Hawks.
Anthony was poked in the eye by Stevenson with 1:51 left, and responded by angrily slamming the ball to the court, leaving the officials with no choice but to call the technical foul. Kyle Korver made the free throw to give Atlanta a 102-101 lead.
Anthony then missed a jumper, but Stoudemire was fouled and made two free throws. Horford scored on an alley-oop eight seconds later, setting the stage for Anthony's final basket.
The All-Star forward finished 15 of 28 from the field and was 9 of 12 behind the arc in his fourth 40-point game this season.
"It's difficult, because he can make the 3-pointer and he's also fast," Horford said. "He has a first step, like we say in the league, it's a quick first step and explosive. He's a good player."
Leading 27-25 after one, the Knicks ran off the first nine points of the second quarter, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Pablo Prigioni to open a 36-25 advantage. The Hawks wiped all of that away in about six minutes, but Anthony steadied the Knicks with three 3-pointers in the final 2:50. It was 52-all at halftime.
Anthony then hit five 3s in a 17-point third quarter, his final one making it 82-74. The Knicks needed all his offense to build a lead, with the Hawks making 9 of 13 shots (69 percent) in the period.
NOTES: Knicks guard Jason Kidd sat out the second half. The Knicks said the 39-year-old was just being rested. ... Because of Rajon Rondo's torn ACL, he will need to be replaced on the Eastern Conference All-Star team, and Hawks coach Larry Drew hopes Commissioner David Stern looks at Smith or Horford. "No doubt about it. I think both of my guys have been overlooked," Drew said. "It's unfortunate what happened to Rondo, but certainly my guys should be in consideration. Strong consideration." ... The Knicks acknowledged Tyson Chandler's All-Star selection during a first-half timeout. With Anthony voted to start, it's the first time the Knicks have had two players picked since Allan Houston and Sprewell in 2001.

Oil gets boost from China, US economic reports
The price of oil rose Thursday on positive economic news from the U.S. and China.
Benchmark oil gained 72 cents to finish at $95.95 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
There are signs that oil demand is picking up in China. HSBC's monthly purchasing managers' index, which gauges manufacturing activity in China, rose for the fifth consecutive month in January to 51.9 from December's 51.5. Readings above 50 indicate expansion. More manufacturing means more energy consumption, which should push oil prices higher.
In the U.S., the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in five years, evidence that employers are cutting fewer jobs and may step up hiring.
Drivers doing the daily commute to work saw pump prices rise slightly overnight to an average of $3.32 a gallon. That's up 3 cents from a week ago.
The Energy Information Administration said oil supplies rose by 2.8 million barrels last week, more than analysts expected. That pushed oil stockpiles to 363.1 million barrels, up 8.5 percent from year-ago levels. But gasoline supplies dropped by 1.7 million barrels as demand rose and refineries slowed down, according to the Energy Department's statistical arm. Analysts had been expecting an increase in gasoline stocks.
On Wednesday, oil dropped by $1.45 per barrel after crude shipments through the Seaway pipeline from Cushing, Okla., to refineries on the Gulf Coast had to be cut to less than half because of limited capacity. Supplies of benchmark crude at the crucial Cushing hub remain at the highest level in 20 years. That's expected to fall as the pipeline carries more crude.
Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose 48 cents to end at $113.28 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.
In other energy futures trading on Nymex:
? Wholesale gasoline rose 3 cents to finish at $2.86 per gallon.
? Natural gas fell 11 cents to end at $3.45 per 1,000 cubic feet.
? Heating oil added less than a penny to finish at $3.09 a gallon.

LG VS870 surfaces at the FCC and WPC, may be an Escape for Verizon
AT&T brought out the LG Escape late last summer as a low-cost Android option with a better-than-usual battery and solid performance. If recent testing is any indicator, a Verizon edition might be in the cards. An LG VS870 (the Escape is the P870) has appeared at the FCC wielding support for Verizon's CDMA and LTE networks. Lest we worry that it's just a simple network switch, there's clues that Verizon is planning a little more: the same phone has already appeared at the Wireless Power Consortium, hinting at Qi wireless charging. How else it might change from the 4.3-inch Escape, if it's indeed similar, isn't visible. There might only be a short wait before we find out, as the roughly equivalent Lucid is long enough in the tooth that a replacement would be very timely.

Indexing Help? - UK Business Forums
It's impossible to say without looking at your site and the code etc... You certainly seem to have an error somewhere.
There is an extension for chrome that tells you whenever you are on a page that has any sort of robot blocking (meta nofollow/noindex etc...)
Try installing that and then look at your pages. You will probably find that they are noindex in some way.
After that you need to figure out where the noindex tag is hiding. Your robots.txt is the obvious place to look, but also check your htaccess file and just your site template for anything that doesn't look right.
Also, on webmaster tools try uploading a sitemap. You can create a site map as a txt file, which is the simplest way to test it. Get google to check the site map and if there are no noindex problems it should be able to find all of your pages no problem.

Travel insurance FAQ
Buying travel insurance is not always a question of choosing the package provided by your tour operator or airline. In fact, it pays to shop around and consider what you need from your international travel insurance before you spend money. Here are a few things to consider when you are buying international travel insurance for your forthcoming vacation or business trip.
Should I buy single trip travel insurance or an annual plan? This depends on how often you travel. If your overseas travel amounts to one week a year then a single trip policy will suit you best. If you travel frequently for business or pleasure then it may be more economical to purchase an annual travel insurance plan. This way you don?t have to worry about getting separate cover for every trip you take. Take care ? some annual plans limit the amount of time you can spend abroad per trip; it is worth checking the small print.
When does trip cancellation cover begin? If you buy travel insurance with trip cancellation insurance then the trip cancellation part of the cover usually begins when you buy the policy, and it lasts until you depart for home. This means that it is worth getting your insurance as soon as you book your trip particularly if you are traveling in winter or bad weather season.
What is an excess? The excess is a part of the claim that you, the insured, has to pay. For example if you have an excess of $50 on your baggage then you pay the first $50 in compensation for lost baggage and receive the rest of the value of the items from the insurance company. You can get a lower excess by paying slightly higher premiums. Do travel insurance plans cover winter sports or extreme sports? Some do and some don?t. You need to check the details of your plan to make sure you are covered for the activities you plan to take part in. Shop around for the best deal on winter sports coverage.

Five Days of {Just Having} Fun with Your Family: Wrap-Up!!
It?s our last day of 5 Days of {Just Having} Fun with Your Family, and I?m struggling to wrap it up?because I want to keep it going and not let it end! ?:)
Overall, this series been a good reminder for me to just take a little time to play each and every day. Some of the benefits I?ve seen this week from play together include:
- Increased bonding among family members.
- Less fighting among the girls.
- Less stress & more energy for me.
I can?t recommend it enough!!
Please take some time and play with your family. ?Whether it?s board games, outdoor games, imaginative play, creative-artsy type play, or whatever it is, just take some time each day to connect!
I?ll leave you with this final thought. ?While I?m not convinced this is all your child needs to turn out well,??I still love this quote. ?We need to spend time together and play together to keep our family bonds strong. ?Our kids don?t need more stuff?they need more of us!
?
Now. ?Go play!!

The Meteoric Rise of the MOOC ? OUSA.ca
In early December, Rylan and I attended one of our regularly scheduled reference panel meetings with Contact North, a leader in online and distance education in Ontario.? After getting through the meeting?s agenda, our conversation became less formal and those of us in attendance began to speak about our own initiatives and recent developments in the PSE sector.? That morning I had read an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education regarding Coursera, arguably the most prominent American educational technology company offering MOOCs, and it?s plan to begin offering employers an employee-matching service that would connect top performing students enrolled in a Coursera MOOC with their respective companies.? As we began to discuss the ways in which this development might impact online education, Maxim Jean-Louis, Contact North?s President and Chief Executive Officer audibly chuckled to himself.? We all turned to him, a little confused as to what was so amusing.? Grinning ear to ear, Maxim said, ?It?s funny.? Had I used the term MOOC a year ago, not a single one of you would?ve had any idea what I was talking about.?
Reflecting on this, I think Maxim is entirely right.? In many ways the PSE news sector was dominated with the sudden and unexpected rise of MOOCs in 2012, but where did they come from?? And more importantly, how are they changing the way we approach higher education here in Ontario?
Before launching into this, it?s probably important to delve into what exactly this sometimes chuckle-inducing acronym is.? A MOOC, which stands for massive open online course, is a free, open, online course with large-scale student enrollment.? Unlike more traditional online courses, MOOC participants do not need to be enrolled at the course?s host institution to participate and typically a student does not receive a recognized credit for course completion.? The oftentimes-staggering student to instructor ratio typical of MOOCs has required institutions offering these courses to abandon many of the typical pedagogies in favour of contemporary digital technologies.? Course design is critical to the establishment of a MOOC.? Open source course material is the norm and commonly takes the form of digital video lectures and podcasts.? Student-instructor interaction is virtually non-existent, with students interacting with one another via discussion boards or in-person study groups.? Course evaluation is typically digital, with online quizzes peppering lectures to ensure students understand the course material before moving on to more complex concepts.
The earliest known MOOC was in fact Canadian in origin, beginning as a class offered through the University of Manitoba that allowed 2300 online students to enroll online for free in 2008.? Over the next four years, the MOOC model was duplicated at a number of higher education institutions and spawned a handful of private course providers including Udacity, edX, and Coursera.? In 2011, news of top-tier American Stanford University?s launch of three MOOCs caught the attention of the PSE sector after course enrollment surpassed over 100 000 students.? Since Stanford?s appearance as a leader within the MOOC movement, many universities across North America have scrambled to develop their own MOOCs and keep pace with the newest online education trend.
What is truly revolutionary about MOOCs is that they have the potential to offer free or low-cost post-secondary education opportunities to groups that have traditionally been unable to access them.? Rural, northern, and low-income students who are unable to afford the tuition associated with higher education or do not live within close proximity to a college or university may have the most to gain from the MOOC trend.? Students from anywhere in the world are able to actively participate in a college or university level course provided they have access to an internet connection.
MOOCs are not without their limitations and to think of them as a potential panacea for the issues associated with online and distance educations would be na?ve.? At their most basic, MOOCs require students to have a high degree of digital literacy and regular access to a reliable internet connection to actively participate in a course.? As more and more private MOOC providers begin to pop up within the sector, discussions regarding the privatization of the post-secondary education and pros and cons of public-private partnerships will have to be addressed.? Course completion rates for MOOCs are significantly lower than other online courses as students do not receive recognized credits for their effort.? Course evaluation is particularly challenging for MOOC instructors, as there are few mechanism currently in place preventing a student from cheating during online quizzes and tests or from collaborating with others on graded coursework.
As MOOCs have become more and more prevalent over the past few years, MOOC providers have inevitably had to begin to look for solutions to these challenges.
Udacity and edX, two American MOOC providers, now offer proctored exams for some of their courses.? Last week, Coursera announced it?s plan to introduce a pilot program for course evaluation that utilizes ?keystroke biometrics? ? the unique cadence and pattern of an individual?s typing ? to combat academic dishonesty.
So what of the future of MOOCs in Canada in 2013?? The University of Toronto (UofT) and the University of British Columbia (UBC) have already jumped on the MOOC bandwagon and have partnered with Coursera to offer a variety of free online courses ranging from Game Theory to the Social Context of Mental Health and Illness.? Just this past December, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded UofT $100 000 to add two additional MOOCs to their current offerings slated for a spring 2013 semester launch.
Some critics question the long-term vitality of the current MOOC wave the sector seems to be riding.? As MOOCs generate little, if any, revenue, some scholars wonder whether or not the fervor that many universities seem to be experiencing over MOOCs will begin to fade in the coming years.? Despite their uncertain future, we at OUSA are excited to further explore the ways in which MOOCs can offer higher education opportunities to those that have typically found themselves unable to access it.
To better understand the MOOC phenomenon (and to learn more about a very interesting and important topic), myself and a few other Home Office staff have enrolled in a MOOC this semester, Aboriginal Worldviews and Education, offered through U of T and Coursera.? Rest assured that in the coming months we?ll be blogging about our experiences so check back frequently!

Shares rebound on U.S. budget talk, yen falls
NEW YORK (Reuters) - World equity markets and oil prices rebounded on Friday after U.S. House Republican leaders said they would seek to break a government budget impasse next week, while the yen was lower against the U.S. dollar ahead of potential asset purchases by the Bank of Japan.
Brent and U.S. crude futures rose in choppy trading, reacting to news that the House of Representatives will consider a bill to raise the U.S. debt ceiling enough to allow the country to pay its bills for another three months.
Stocks on Wall Street pared losses on news of the new Republican strategy. Earlier, U.S. stocks had faltered on a survey that showed U.S. consumer sentiment at its lowest in over a year in January and a disappointing earnings outlook from chipmaker Intel.
The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment came in at 71.3, down from 72.9 the month before. The index was at its lowest since December 2011.
"It's a disappointing figure and helped put pressure on risky assets," said Greg Moore, a currency strategist at TD Securities in Toronto.
"Markets for the last two weeks have been grinding higher, without much fundamentals backing it up. So this is a reality check. But it's still fairly early in the year and things could change," he said.
U.S. Treasury debt prices extended modest gains. The U.S. benchmark 10-year Treasury note ticked up 11/32 in price to yield 1.8453 percent.
Omer Esiner, a chief market analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange in Washington said the consumer confidence numbers would be closely scrutinized, given the still-uncertain impact of higher payroll taxes on the consumer.
"This is a big miss and could mark the beginning of a downward trend in sentiment and in spending," Esiner said.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 6.32 points, or 0.05 percent, at 13,602.34. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 0.16 points, or 0.01 percent, at 1,481.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 8.23 points, or 0.26 percent, at 3,127.78.
Disappointing economic data in the UK helped pushed European shares downward. The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top shares closed 0.16 percent lower at 1,163.64.
China reported that its economy grew at a slightly faster-than-expected 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, a clear sign it has avoided a sharp economic slowdown, though the annual growth rate was its weakest in 13 years.
The China data came on top of strong U.S. labour and housing market reports on Thursday, providing fresh impetus to a broad rally in equities, precious metals and commodities since the start of the year.
MSCI's index of leading world shares hit its highest level since May 2011 at 351.70, but later gave back some gains to trade up at 351.47.
Spot gold retreated $2.11 to $1,685.10 an ounce.
Oil supply disruption fears were reinforced by the Islamic militant attack and hostage-taking at a gas plant in Algeria, a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.
Lack of progress from another round of talks between the United Nations' nuclear agency and Iran about Tehran's nuclear program also pushed prices higher.
Brent crude rose 81 cents at $111.91 barrel, while U.S. oil rose 7 cents at $95.56 a barrel.
Sources familiar with the BOJ's thinking told Reuters the central bank, under relentless pressure from Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, will consider making an open-ended commitment to buy assets until 2 percent inflation is in sight.
"This is a big deal," said Jens Nordvig, global head of currency strategy at Nomura Securities in New York.
"But as always from a trading perspective, it matters greatly what is already priced," he added.
The euro last traded 0.2 percent lower against the yen at 119.96 yen, down from 120.70 earlier - its highest since May 2011.
The euro was also down against the dollar, falling 0.36 percent on the day to $1.3327.

Foreclosures Decline 3 Percent in 2012 From Year Before | Real ...
By Dennis Norman, on January 17th, 2013
Foreclosure filings (default notices, scheduled foreclosures and bank repos) were reported on 1,836,634 properties in the U.S. in 2012, which is a decline of 3 percent from 2011 and down a whopping 36 percent from the peak of 2.9 million properties in 2010, according to a report just released by RealtyTrac.
Report highlights ? 2012 Year End:
- Foreclosure activity in 2012 increased from 2011 in 25 states ? 20 of which primarily use the longer judicial foreclosure process ? including New Jersey (55 percent increase), Florida (53 percent increase), Connecticut (48 percent increase), Indiana (46 percent increase), Illinois (33 percent increase) and New York (31 percent increase).
- Foreclosure activity in 2012 decreased from 2011 in 25 states ? 19 of which primarily use the more streamlined non-judicial foreclosure process ? including Nevada (57 percent decrease), Utah (40 percent decrease), Oregon (40 percent decrease), Arizona (33 percent decrease), California (25 percent decrease) and Michigan (23 percent decrease).
- Florida posted the nation?s highest state foreclosure rate in 2012, with 3.11 percent of housing units (one in 32) receiving a foreclosure filing during the year. Other states with top 5 foreclosure rates were Nevada (2.70 percent), Arizona (2.69 percent), Georgia (2.58 percent), and Illinois (2.58 percent).
- December foreclosure activity dropped 10 percent from the previous month to the lowest level since April 2007, a 68-month low, and fourth quarter foreclosure activity was at the lowest quarterly level since the third quarter of 2007 despite a 9 percent quarterly increase in bank repossessions.
- The average time to complete a foreclosure nationwide in the fourth quarter increased 8 percent from the previous quarter to a record-high 414 days.
- Lower foreclosure inventory gave sellers the upper hand and helped median sales prices in the first 10 months of 2012 to increase from the same time period in 2011 in 25 states. Median sales prices nationwide during the first 10 months of 2012 on average were 99 percent of median list prices.
- In January 2013, 10.9 million homeowners nationwide ? representing 26 percent of all outstanding homes with a mortgage ? were seriously underwater, meaning they owed at least 25 percent more on their home than what it was worth. That was down from 12.5 million h

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Al Pacino will play Joe Paterno in a movie about the late Penn State football coach.
Producer Edward R. Pressman confirms Brian De Palma will direct "Happy Valley," the tentative title of the film, based on Joe Posnanski's best-seller "Paterno."
"'Happy Valley' reunites the 'Scarface' and 'Carlito's Way' team of De Palma and Pacino for the third time and I can't think of a better duo to tell this story of a complex, intensely righteous man who was brought down by his own tragic flaw," Pressman said in a statement. No start or release dates were given for the film.
While Pressman said the plot remains "under wraps," Posnanski's book followed Paterno's final years, as the winningest coach in college football history saw his career end in disgrace in 2011 with the sex abuse scandal involving assistant Jerry Sandusky.

Country or career an easy call
Fernando Martinez stands as one of several players in the mix to make the Houston Astros? outfield. But he has more up against him in that quest than just competition from Rick Ankiel,?Justin Maxwell, J.D. Martinez and Brandon Barnes. He has up against him his participation in the World Baseball Classic, where he will play for Spain.
His general manager, Jeff Luhnow, admitted as much. From Brian McTaggart?s story at Astros.com:
?The big challenge is ? a guy like Fernando Martinez, who?s trying to make our club, [being] gone for an extended period of time. I think that potentially hurts him, even if he does well in the Classic,? Luhnow said. ?It hurts him because he?s not there with our coaches, being seen firsthand. It makes it a little bit more difficult. The fact he?s playing for Spain means he?s not going to be gone the whole month. Nothing against Spain, but they?re not likely to make it past the first round.?
I understand that we?re supposed to be all-in on the World Baseball Classic and that players who don?t take it seriously have a bad attitude, lack patriotism and are otherwise ?idle heroes,? but I?m sorry: if a general manager for a baseball team is saying that participating in it is going to have negative implications for you, you should not be playing in the WBC. If I?m Martinez?s agent I have him call the Spanish manager, say ?smell you later,? and make sure my client?s butt is in?Osceola County Stadium from the first day of Spring Training until the team breaks camp so as to give him the best chance to win a job.
As for what this says about the Classic itself, yes, I acknowledge that Martinez is a borderline major leaguer at best, and I acknowledge that Morosi?s point yesterday was that the big stars should be participating, not the Fernando Martinez?s of the world. But this little example is still telling with respect to the WBC?s true place in the baseball?hierarchy and still explains why many big stars, quite understandably, choose not to participate.
For one thing, for Spain anyway, Fernando Martinez is a big star. He?s the best they can do in their outfield. And if the WBC is to become what Morosi and everyone who rah-rahs it wants it to be, every team has to put its best possible lineup out there. Watching all the American, Japanese, Korean, Cuban and Dominican superstars trounce the relatively empty rosters of other teams ? which is what will happen if Jeff Luhnow?s sentiments are shared by GMs of other players like Martinez ? will not turn this into the World Cup Part Deux, which is the ultimate aim Morosi and those who think like him about the WBC want it to be. It will keep it as a curious exhibition, best ignored until the late rounds at the most.
But more broadly, this little episode reveals that the teams and executives don?t value the WBC anywhere close to how they value the MLB season, even if they?re strongly encouraged to say they do by Major League Baseball and strongly wished to by WBC backers like Morosi. That has direct consequences for guys like Martinez, but you can?t tell me that superstars aren?t impacted by this too. They want to win in the MLB season and they want to be on the same page as their manager, their coaches and, yes, their front office. ?No, Mike Trout and Bryce Harper won?t lose their jobs if they don?t play for Team USA, but it?s bleedin? obvious that they have greater priorities and, if forced to be truthful, Jerry Dipoto and Mike Rizzo would prefer them to be in camp all spring rather than playing in the WBC.
It is not a lack of patriotism or a poor attitude that keeps all the superstars from playing in the WBC. It is the disconnect ? the tremendous, tremendous gulf between the importance of the MLB season and the importance of the WBC ? that keeps all the superstars from participating. And, contrary to what Morosi and other say, this gulf cannot be crossed merely by putting a nation?s colors on the uniform and simply asserting that it matters for flag and country.

Mathematicians Aim To Take Publishers Out of Publishing
The same way as at present. Reviewers are not paid, they are basically volunteers.
The traditional model works like this:
1) a paper is written (no one gets paid)
2) it's sent to a journal, where the editor (paid) looks and decides whether or not to pass it on to reviewers (only the journal staff are paid)
3) the paper is sent to reviewers who make comments and suggest whether to publish or not (no one gets paid)
4) if the paper is not-worthy it's sent back to the author/s who decided to revise and resubmit or whatever (no one gets paid)
5) if the paper is accepted, the author has to sign over copyright (no one gets paid)
6) the paper is published, and if the author wants more than the "complementary" copies, has to pay. If anyone else wants to see the article, they have to pay. The journal makes loads of money for very little work.
Another model cuts out the last two steps, and the journal makes their money from ads, donations, grants or other sponsorship (e.g. from a university). Another model has volunteers all the way through. It's not difficult.

VICENZA, Italy (AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta fired off a strong defense of gun control legislation Thursday, in front of a decidedly skeptical audience.
Speaking to about 150 members of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Panetta said steps can be taken to protect kids in school without undermining the Second Amendment.
"Who the hell needs armor-piercing bullets except you guys in battle?" Panetta told the soldiers at the U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza in northern Italy. "For the life of me, I don't know why the hell people have to have assault weapons."
Panetta, who said he believes in the Second Amendment and has been a longtime duck hunter, was asked about the issue by a soldier who wanted to know what steps the Obama administration was going to take to deal with attacks in schools that "don't have to do with tearing apart our Second Amendment."
Known for his often blunt and colorful language, Panetta added that things can be done to protect children "so that the nuts that are out there won't use these kinds of weapons to wipe them out."
President Barack Obama's sweeping gun control package includes calls for a ban on assault weapons and a universal requirement for background checks on gun purchases.

Gaming Law Would Allow Interstate Pools for Online Poker - Roulette
?
The Nevada State Gaming Control Board has introduced a bill in the Nevada General Assembly that will give the governor the power to enter into interstate gaming agreements with other states, giving Nevada the ability to work with other states to offer online gaming without action from the federal government.
The bill removes language in a previous law that outlawed online gaming licenses until the Department of Justiice approves interactive gaming or until a federal law was passed allowing online gaming. The bill will be considered when the Nevada legistlative session begins on February 4th.
Nevada and Delaware have passed laws allowing intrastate online gaming, a possibility that became feasible when the Department of Justice stated that the Wire Act applies only to sports betting. States previously believed that all activities that involved money being moved over state lines were illegal.
Nevada is now in the position to be the leader in offering interstate gaming. They are the only state to have passed regulations governing online poker, and have a great deal of experience in regulating gambling activities.
The benefits to multi-state gambling compacts are obvious. Because some states may not have enough players in the state to offer interesting games, gaming compacts will allow those states to pool their players, allowing for the possibility of many more players to be online at one time. It will also allow a set standard of rules and regulations for each state rather than forcing each state to develop it?s own rules.
Significant questions still remain, including which agency will be in charge of regulating the interstate pools. While the Nevada Gaming Commission would seem the logical choice, many states might be hesitent to give that much power to an out of state agency.

Major flu outbreak threatens to slow economy further
10 hrs.
Mark Koba , CNBC.com
One of the worst flu seasons in a decade is putting further strains on an already sluggish U.S. economy as companies get slammed with increased health care costs and lower productivity from widespread worker absences.
On average, seasonal flu outbreaks cost U.S. employers $10.4 billion in direct costs of hospitalization and outpatient visits, according to the Centers for Disease Control. That doesn't include the indirect costs related to lost productivity and worker absenteeism.
Bad flu season worsens as Boston declares emergency
But this year, that figure is expected to go much higher, as the flu virus has shown up in some 41 states with 29 of them reporting high or severe levels of sickness as thousands are flooding into hospital emergency rooms and doctor's offices.?
"If this is a major influenza outbreak, like the Spanish flu of 1918, it could have a very significant effect on economic growth," said Timothy G. Nash professor in Free Market Economics at Northwood University. "If GDP is projected to be be 2 percent this year, the flu could cut that back to one half percent growth rate."
Related:Are you worried you'll have to miss work because of the flu?
"A non-epidemic flu ... causes more than 200,000 people to be hospitalized and costs our economy," Nash said. "We don't know if this is a like 1918 but we can't ignore the serious nature of what's going on."
"The last thing we need in a slow economy is a major flu epidemic," said Paul Mangiamele, CEO of the Bennigan's restaurant chain located throughout the U.S. "It's bad enough as it is without the flu taking even more customers away."
Mangiamele said his company is on "orange alert' to try and keep the flu impact to a minimum.
"We have basic high-end standards on hygiene anyway but we're doing more work in making sure our utensils are extra clean and making sure the salt and pepper shakers have been rubbed down and every worker washes their hands. We're just ramping up our normal effort," said Mangiamele.
How to protect yourself from the flu
This particularly devastating flu season started five weeks earlier than usual and caught many people off guard. Flu season usually peaks in late January or early February but by November the flu was already severe and widespread in some parts of the South and Southeast, and now in the Northeast and Midwest.
There have been more than 2,257 hospitalizations associated with the flu, according to the CDC. Some 18 children in the U.S have died from it.
The city of Boston has declared a pubic health emergency as a result of the flu outbreak. Massachusetts said some 18 people have died in the state from flu related illness. South Carolina reports 22 dead so far. Two people died in Sacramento, California. In Minnesota, 900 people were hospitalized because of the flu and four people died.
For the fourth week in a row, the proportion of people seeing health care providers for flu-like illness is above the national average and jumped from 2.8 percent to 5.6 percent in that time, according to the CDC. Last season's proportion peaked at 2.2 percent, the CDC reports.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employee absences are traditionally up during the winter flu season -- some 32 percent higher than the rest of the year. The highest number of absentees was 3.3 million in 2008 -- a severe flu season.
Employees who are sick and go into work aren't really doing their colleagues any favors, said John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc, an outplacement firm.?
"Sick employees may think they're doing the right thing by going in, but the fact is they are only making matters worse by exposing themselves to others," Challenger said.?
"The business culture is changing and I think most firms are more accepting of people calling in sick, especially during the flu season," said Challenger.?
"What a business should be doing is offering flu shots, and giving comp days to workers who are sick and feel like coming in. Coming in sick and doing sub par work won't really help," argued Challenger.
The predominant type of flu that is circulating is H3N2 Influenza A virus, which is making up 76 percent of the viruses reported, according to the CDC.?
Doctors urge everyone six months and older to be given a flu shot or vaccine. The CDC said that flu viruses are likely to be spread for the next two to three months. It's not too late to get the flu shot, but it takes about two weeks for it to offer full protection, said the CDC.?
For businesses, suggestions to help cut down the affects of the flu include limiting meetings, allow for flexible work hours, provide hand sanitizers, enourage workers to wash their hands often, and allow workers to stay home without losing their jobs.
"Firms really need to get a flu program in place before this gets worse," Challenger said. "Otherwise they won't be productive."
If there's one consolation, the U.S. has a higher quality of health care to handle a flu outbreak than the rest of the world, said Northwood University's?Nash.
"Our health care system is much better than other countries when it comes to handling an epidemic and the economy of other countries would suffer much more than ours," said Nash.

University of Washington
The deluge of data coming from today's countless electronic devices will be harnessed to take on the most pressing problems facing science and society at a new computational institute in Seattle.
The Northwest Institute for Advanced Computing is being formed by the University of Washington and the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash. Researchers associated with the institute will work to ensure the next generation of computers and the methods used to run them can address challenges ranging from climate change to energy management.
"Computing has transformed science, engineering and society in remarkable ways," said Doug Ray, associate director of PNNL's Fundamental & Computational Sciences Directorate. "But as huge amounts of new data are generated daily by scientific instruments and household electronics, new technologies and approaches are needed to give that information more meaning. Researchers at the Northwest Institute for Advanced Computing will tackle 'big data' and help improve the quality of life for many U.S. citizens."
Located on UW's campus, the institute will be a center of collaboration where UW and PNNL researchers jointly explore advanced computer system designs, accelerate data-driven scientific discovery and improve computational modeling and simulation. Scientists and engineers at the institute will also train future researchers in modern computational approaches.
The institute's research will aim to help solve a wide variety of the world's growing problems. For example, improved computational techniques can help design a smart electric grid that reliably delivers energy to keep homes warm and lit. Better analysis of biological data can help determine the causes of disease and how to treat health ailments.
Computer modeling can help explain how climate change impacts natural resources such as snow packs and the formation of greenhouse gas-capturing molecules in the atmosphere. And smartphone data can be used to improve urban life, such as decreasing idle traffic while also reducing carbon emissions from cars.
"The expanded partnership between UW and PNNL will create tremendous new opportunities for both organizations," said Ed Lazowska, UW's Bill & Melinda Gates Chair in Computer Science & Engineering and director of the UW eScience Institute. "'Big data' is transforming the process of discovery in all fields. UW and PNNL have significant and complementary strengths; together we'll be able to do amazing things."
UW and PNNL also hope to strengthen the Northwest's economy. The institute will build on UW's and PNNL's existing and already-strong relationships with the region's private technology industry. The institute will also help grow the region's skilled workforce for UW, PNNL, the Northwest technology sector and beyond.
Two co-directors will lead the institute: UW electrical engineering chair and Applied Computational Engineering Lab Director Vikram Jandhyala and PNNL Fellow Moe Khaleel, who directs PNNL's Computational Science and Mathematics research division. PNNL is funding the time spent by both Jandhyala and Khaleel leading the institute. Institute members from UW and PNNL will jointly submit proposals to various funding agencies for new research projects.
"This collaboration will open up new avenues for research at the interface of computational advances and applications, and is a great synergy for UW and PNNL," Jandhyala said.
"This will be an interdisciplinary place for UW faculty in computer science, electrical engineering and applied math to work with PNNL colleagues on areas such as computational physics, big data, cyber security and computing for the smart grid," Khaleel said.
The institute's headquarters are inside UW's Sieg Hall, but the institute will be broader than that specific location. Its research members will hail from many of UW's numerous schools and colleges. And PNNL scientists and engineers will work from both Seattle and the national laboratory's main campus in Richland.
PNNL currently has two scientists who conduct DOE-funded research related to big data and nuclear physics from UW's Seattle campus. About eight more PNNL researchers are expected to join them in Seattle by the end of 2013. All Seattle-based PNNL researchers involved in advanced computing will be associated with the institute. And initially more than a dozen of UW's faculty members are expected to join the institute.
Institute members will use computational resources already in place at their home institutions. In Seattle, that includes the Hyak supercomputer developed by UW's eScience Institute and UW-IT. Richland resources include components of the PNNL Institutional Computing program, which features the Olympus supercomputer. Cloud resources will also be used extensively.
Both UW and PNNL are well known for their contributions to advanced computing. UW is known for its computer science and engineering, electrical engineering and applied mathematics programs. UW's eScience Institute has advanced data-driven discovery, and the university's computational programs in physics, chemistry and astronomy are highly regarded.
And PNNL is known for designing and programming high-performance computers and evaluating their performance. PNNL leads research in computational molecular science, multi-scale mathematics, regional climate modeling and the modeling of underground fluids such as water.
